Harry Helps Family Cope                                                           The Globe and Mail Reports:

Depression and death are central themes in Rowling's Harry Potter books. Harry survives the murderous attack on his family, but bears his signature jagged scar on his forehead from his nearly fatal encounter and continues to grieve for his parents. Very early in the first book, Harry looks into a magic mirror and sees his dead parents. Later he learns this is a reflection of what he longs for most in life.

Despite all his magic spells and potions, Harry remains vulnerable to the Dementors, the black spirits that can suck all the hope and optimism out of people. The Dementors are Harry's kryptonite. If they land a kiss on your lips, they can rob you of your soul, but leave your body functioning in a kind of spiritual death. The point is that children, just like the rest of us, can be victims of depression.

Lucky CoS Commercial Tester Tells All
Dark Horizons Reports:

Harry Potter and The Chamber of Secrets: Seems that Warners is starting to test commercials for "Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets." Here's Chris with a point-by-point description of what he saw:

"Just today my friend and I were a part of a test market for the "Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets" TV Spots. We both saw separate TV Spots. And I just thought I would e-mail a description of the TV Spot I saw to you.

It starts out with a camera view going down what looks like a tower. You then see the Chamber of Secrets open. The spot then cuts to a clip of Dobby using his magic to drop the cake on Uncle Vernon's Sister (I forgot her name, I have only read the Second Book Twice). You then a good view of Dobby and a good look at Moaning Myrtle. You then see various clips of Professor Lockhart and of the Car in the Forbidden Forest. The Movie logo the pops up and says "Coming November 15".

I thought that would be an interesting bit of info. My friend said the other TV Spot may not be Parental Friendly (They shot Harry bleeding) so the may not keep that one. But it also focuses on the Potter/Malfoy feud a little more."

Premiere Magazine Talks About CoS Production                  Here's what a reader from TLC sent in from Premiere Magazine's latest issue:

After directing the $318 million-grossing Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone, Columbus received thousands of letters thanking him for staying true to J.K. Rowling's magical best-seller. Critics, however, complained that the film held few surprises. "We got a lot of heat for being so faithful," Columbus says. "But you can't do it any better than it's written on the page." Potter-heads should be equally pleased by his sequel. Like the novel, Columbus says, the film is "darker and edgier" than Sorcerer's Stone. This year at school, Harry discovers that an unknown descendant of the Slytherin dynasty has petrified many of the students, literally. "There's a lot more adventure. You have bigger set pieces, like the spider's lair and the Chamber of Secrets," says Columbus, who compensated for less postproduction time by shooting most of the special-effects scenes up front. Branagh provides comic relief as egocentric Defense Against the Dark Arts teacher Gilderoy Lockhart. (Hugh Grant was originally considered for the role, but it was decided that even with his hair dyed blond his A-list persona would be too distracting.) Working with extravagant sets and special effects was a new experience for Branagh, but nothing compared to acting with teenagers. "The kids completely suspend disbelief," he says. "When Alan Rickman and I are dueling with wands, that's exactly what we're doing. They get rather surprised when someone says, 'Cut'." Radcliffe "has become a professional actor," Columbus says. "He gets his performance on take two or three, where it used to take five or six." The Secret of His Successor: Columbus will not direct the next installment, Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban. "I haven't had dinner with my kids in two years," he says. But as executive producer, he will have a big say in who takes his place. One candidate is Branagh, who admits that he would find the opportunity "irresistible."

Harry Potter Hot Dog

I recently went to eat at the legendary hot dog stand, Pink's, in Los Angeles for the first time. Their menu is long and varied, and some of their dogs are named after celebrities or movies...one of which is the "Harry Potter Dog." It consists of a Polish sausage dog topped with grilled onions, mushrooms, bacon, and nacho cheese. I thought it was funny...being a huge HP fan, I considered buying it, but it seemed a bit too much for me. Just thought you should know.

Harry Potter May Save Japan's Declining Book Industry
Japan Times Reports:

Although everyone agrees that the Japanese publishing industry is in trouble, there is less consensus as to the causes. Book and magazine sales have been declining for five years and book revenues for last year were at roughly the same level as a decade earlier; indeed, some say that if it were not for the Harry Potter series sales would have fallen over 30 percent from the previous 30 years.

Producers Fight Puberty to Make Blockbuster Sequels
Canada.com Reports:

LOS ANGELES - The makers of the Spy Kids and Harry Potter movies have found themselves in a race against puberty to put sequels into theatres while their young stars are still baby-faced.

With hundreds of millions of dollars at stake, the hurried pace for those follow-ups is a bid to dodge the kind of downtime that stifled the Home Alone series as Macaulay Culkin sprouted into adolescence.

It was only last summer when Alexa Vega, now almost 14, and Daryl Sabara, 10, first appeared as quarrelling sibling spies in the childrens comedy Spy Kids. Now theyre back in Spy Kids 2: The Island of Lost Dreams and preparing to start a third film for release next July.

That will be the end, according to the stars and director-creator Robert Rodriguez.

I think if we keep on going, well be too old, said Vega, who added that sequel-conscious producers were initially resistant to giving her the part of big-sister superspy Carmen Cortez.

I was 10, and I think all the other girls auditioning were eight, Vega said. They didnt want it to turn into Spy Teens, which its kind of doing, so thats why we just tried to blow one movie out of the way and do the next one and the other one coming up.

The yearly chronology of author J. K. Rowlings Harry Potter books demanded back-to-back shooting schedules for the film adaptations, said Chris Columbus, director of last Novembers Harry Potter and the Philosophers Stone and the upcoming Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets.

Both films star the now 13-year-old Daniel Radcliffe as Harry, and Rupert Grint, 13, and Emma Watson, 12, as his pals Ron and Hermione.

The drawback is you cant stop the aging process, so theres no chance of a big break between films, Columbus said. And you cant shoot all the films simultaneously, like The Lord of the Rings, because you need the kids to look a little older each time.

Columbus said with three of the planned seven books in the series still unpublished, its unlikely the same cast can be maintained until the final movie adaptation.

LOTR DVD/Video Already Broken Advance Sells Record  Ananova Reports:

Lord Of The Rings is being tipped to beat Harry Potter when it is released on video and DVD.

Tens of thousands of people have already ordered copies of the film which goes on sale on Tuesday.

An HMV spokesman says pre-orders have already broken records in its stores.

"This is the biggest number of pre-orders we have ever had for any film," he said.

"Harry Potter was a family movie but it didn't have the same collectible feel to it. Because Lord Of The Rings is a fantasy film it has more of a cult following."

More than 34,000 fans have ordered the film from online retailer Amazon.co.uk - twice as many as it had for recent hits Gladiator and Moulin Rouge combined.

It has been number one in its DVD and video charts for the past nine weeks.

Voices Are Changing                                                           Countingdown.com Reports:

Harry Potter star Rupert Grint has revealed how both he and co-star Daniel Radcliffe are growing up-their voices have broken.

He admitted: "My voice is a lot lower than it was in the last film."

Rupert, 13, who plays Ron Weasley in the film series, says that his own voice started changing at the start of shooting the latest movie, Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets.

He said: "It's strange. Dan's has broken completely. But they had decided that they were going to break it in the film anyway, so it hasn't been a problem with the producers."

Rupert is back on screens this month in new kids' movie Thunderpants, in which he plays a young boffin Alan A. Allen. The movie features cameos from Leslie Phillips and Stephen Fry.

The young actor is becoming a big star, and is even receiving his own fan mail. He said: "I get lots of letters from girls and it feels really weird, but it's funny as well."
